How To Fly to Orlando on Rewards Points or Miles

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is just 20 minutes from Disney World. More than 30 airlines fly to Orlando, including some well-known domestic carriers:

Alaska Airlines American Airlines Delta Air Lines Frontier Airlines Hawaiian Airlines JetBlue Airways Southwest Airlines Spirit Airlines United Airlines

Orlando/MCO is a hub for regional airline Silver Airways. Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is another option, which serves low-cost carriers like Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines. It’s about a 45 minute drive from Disney World.

How Much Do Award Flights to Orlando Cost?

To give you an idea of how much a flight would cost, both in dollars and frequent flyer miles, here’s what to expect for an economy class ticket—note that this does not include basic economy or economy plus. Data was gathered two months in advance for a flight in early July.  Also, it’s important to note that these flights are based on summer travel dates, and summer is the peak season for Orlando. This may result in higher award flight costs. If you want to maximize your savings, consider booking a trip at a different time of the year, preferably one that doesn’t coincide with school breaks.

Average Mile Valuations Hint at What To Expect

While looking over award requirements and cash pricing for a flight, it can help to understand how much a reward mile is worth from each of the airlines in general. According to research undertaken by The Balance, you may be able to get more value from Southwest or JetBlue than from other airlines on domestic economy flights. The cards above restrict you to redeeming only with the co-branded airline and its partner airlines. If you want more flexibility, consider a general travel card that allows you to transfer your points or miles to multiple airlines. These cards also allow you to use points or miles on any airline by booking a flight through their travel portals or, in some cases, “erasing” any travel purchase by requesting a statement credit. Some options include:

American Express Gold Card: Get 60,000 bonus points (worth $960 on average when used for domestic economy travel on transfer partner Delta) after you spend $4,000 in the first three months. You’ll also earn 4 points per dollar on up to $25,000 spent annually at U.S. grocery stores and on dining, 3 points per dollar on flights booked through Amex Travel or directly with airlines, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Domestic airline partners of Amex’s Membership Rewards program include Delta, Hawaiian, and JetBlue. Annual fee: $250. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel. Earn unlimited 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, plus 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. Annual fee: $95. Chase Sapphire Preferred: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That’s $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Enjoy benefits such as a $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit, 5x on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3x on dining and 2x on all other travel purchases, plus more. Chase’s Ultimate Rewards program allows you to transfer points to JetBlue, Southwest, and United, among others. Annual fee: $95. Citi Premier Card: For a limited time, earn 60,000 bonus points (worth $726 on average when used for domestic economy travel with transfer partner JetBlue) when they spend $4,000 in the first months. Additionally, they’ll earn 3 points per dollar at restaurants, gas stations, and supermarkets, as well as on air travel and hotels. Besides JetBlue, airline partners for the Citi ThankYou program include Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines. All other purchases net just 1 point per dollar. Annual fee: $95.

Take some time to determine which card is the best fit for you. While some general travel rewards programs give you more flexibility with redemption, they typically don’t offer airline-specific perks like free checked bags, priority boarding, and in-flight discounts.

How To Pay for a Hotel in Orlando With Points

As a major tourist destination, Orlando has a lot of options for hotel stays. You can stay in a hotel on Disney World’s property, virtually next door, or even farther away if you also have other plans in mind. You can get the points you need from a hotel credit card or a general travel rewards credit card. Here are some hotels in the area and what you can expect to pay for a five-night stay with two adults, in dollars or points: The Hyatt Place Orlando/Lake Buena Vista example offers the best value because the points you’d use to book it are worth around 1.3 cents, which is above the 1-cent-per-point bench mark for a travel booking. The Country Inn & Suites by Radisson offers the least value, at 0.28 cents per point, well below the 1-cent-per-point bench mark. You can get more context about the points prices you see when you’re booking by understanding what a particular hotel chain’s points are usually worth. According to The Balance’s research into the average value of hotel points, here are the point values you can expect in general to get when booking a low-tier or mid-tier award room:

Cardholders also get 9 points per dollar spent at Hyatt hotels; 2 points per dollar at restaurants, on airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, on local transit and commuting, as well as on fitness club and gym memberships; and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Additionally, you can earn points or miles with a flexible rewards program and transfer them to the hotel brand of your choice. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve partner with Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott rewards programs. If you have a card like the American Express Gold Card or The Platinum Card from American Express, you can transfer your points to Choice Privileges, Hilton, and Marriott.

What About Rental Cars?

There aren’t any co-branded rental car credit cards, but you can typically use general travel rewards points or even airline miles or hotel points to book a rental car.  With Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards, for instance, you can book rental cars directly through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal—the same goes for American Express with the Membership Rewards portal. With Capital One, you can book through the card issuer’s travel portal or you can book the car through a travel agency website or directly with the rental car company, then use your miles to get reimbursed for some or all of the purchase amount. Orlando International Airport has 10 rental car companies, including:
